#CodingLabStudents: Caleb Asher Kusumo, 12-Year-Old NOI 2025 Bronze Medallist!

At just 12 years old, Caleb has done something truly remarkable — earning a Bronze Award at the National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) 2025, one of Singapore’s most challenging coding competitions! Tackling advanced algorithmic problems written for secondary and JC students, Caleb stood shoulder to shoulder with some of the nation’s brightest and came away with a medal to show for it.

Caleb’s journey has been all about trying a lot of things. As a homeschooled student, he’s had the freedom to explore his interests. He has over 1,500 books that his mum lovingly collected, and aside from robotics, he also loves business and economics, swimming, and trying new food. Through it all, Caleb enjoys taking on new challenges and sees something new to learn every day. His story reminds us that childhood is meant for exploring, and that learning, at its best, is filled with laughter, joy, and wide-eyed excitement. From biking across Mars in his imagination to building apps that raise awareness for animal conservation, Aqil, age 12, brings bold creativity and deep purpose to everything he does.

His passion for history, space, and making a difference truly stood out at the International Coding Showcase (ICS) 2024/25, where he won Gold, received the Judges’ Choice for Most Creative & Social Impact, and was specially selected by Singapore Zoo staff for the Wildlife Conservation Award—a triple achievement that reflects his inspiring journey!

He has also previously taken part in other competitions, such as the MIT AI & Education Summit ‘Hack the Climate’ Hackathon (Beginner Open Category), where he and his teammates won the 2nd Prize!

A seasoned ICS participant, Joseph’s years of effort and growth were recognized at the International Coding Showcase 2024/25, where he earned the coveted Platinum Award.

With a love for structured thinking and a heart set on improving technology for everyone, Joseph proves that small steps—like snapping LEGO bricks or writing lines of code—can lead to big achievements.

Shinji has consecutively won top prizes in the annual International Coding Showcase for the past 3 years - Distinction Award in 2022, Platinum and Judge’s Choice (Most Innovative) Awards in 2023, and Gold and Judge’s Choice Award (Most Innovative) Awards in 2024/25!

Beyond his strong coding skills, Shinji has a unique talent for solving problems in unexpected ways. He has twice earned the “Most Innovative” award with projects addressing global challenges such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Singapore Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts. You know it’s your passion when you keep going — even after missing the first chance. That’s how Sanya’s coding journey began. She missed the sign-up for her school’s coding activity, but she didn’t let that stop her. She told her parents she still wanted to learn coding — and that’s how she found Coding Lab. The rest is history.

Today, at just 12 years old, Sanya is the proud winner of SheHacks 2025 — a prestigious hackathon that celebrates creativity and innovation, and won the Silver Award in the International Coding Showcase 2024/2025!

💬 “Coding has made a difference in my life by improving my problem-solving skills and helping me think outside the box. Debugging reminds me of real life – it’s hard to find the problem at first, but with a different perspective, you can always figure it out.”

Sanya now dreams of working at Google — a platform used by millions every day. She’s passionate about closing the gender gap in big tech companies and making sure women get the recognition they deserve for their contributions.
