#CodingLabStudents: Dionysia Kyvetou, ICS 2024/25 Gold Award Winner!

Meet Dionysia Kyvetou, or Denise, a 10-year-old competitive swimmer from Stamford American International School and avid reader who brings just as much passion to the keyboard as she does to the pool.

Her love for animals and creative ideas led her to win the Gold Award at the International Coding Showcase (ICS) 2024/25 with a meaningful Python project!

From fiction books to real-world coding, Denise shows us that you’re never too young to make an impact. Read on to find out more about her ICS journey!

Denise, our Gold Award winner for the International Coding Showcase (ICS) 2024/25 Award Ceremony held at the Singapore Zoo with Mr. Foo (Founder, Coding Lab)

Through ICS, I learned to bring my ideas to life using Python and even picked up presentation skills while preparing my video.

Our #CodingLabStudent is also an avid reader and competitive swimmer!

Hi Denise, tell us more about yourself!

I’m a competitive swimmer, so I spend a lot of time training in the pool. I’m also a bookworm—I love reading both fiction and non-fiction! When I’m not swimming or reading, I enjoy coding and coming up with creative project ideas.

How did you start coding?

I began my coding journey at age 6 with Coding Lab’s Scratch classes. It was really fun and helped me understand how to build games and animations. That’s how I discovered I love coding!

Why did you decide to join the International Coding Showcase 24/25 (ICS)?

I wanted to put my coding skills to the test and learn more about Python. I’m also a big animal lover, so I found the competition’s theme very interesting—it gave me a chance to work on something I really care about.

Inspired by ICS, I’m now coding another game for my school project—to promote the idea of anti-animal testing!

What have you learned from your ICS participation?

I learned how to use new Python libraries to bring my project idea to life. I also practised my presentation skills while working on my video, which helped me express my ideas clearly and confidently.

Here is Denise’s ICS 2024/25 Entry, The Sounds of Endangered Animals in Singapore Zoo, that won her the Gold Award! As an animal lover, Denise wants to raise awareness about endangered animals through her program. She hopes hearing and learning about these animals will also make you want to make a difference!

What are your future coding aspirations?

I want to keep using coding to support causes I care about. Right now, I’m working on a new game for my school project to promote anti-animal testing. I hope to keep creating projects that spread awareness and make a difference.

Denise’s journey shows that coding isn’t just about tech—it’s about heart, purpose, and sharing your voice. Whether she’s training in the pool or crafting games that raise awareness, Denise is diving into every challenge with dedication and compassion. We can’t wait to see what she codes next!
