ICS helped me think more creatively and solve real problems through coding. It taught me to be innovative and express ideas in new ways, which really pushed me to grow as a programmer.

Hi Yu Shern, tell us more about yourself!

In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball and video games to relax. I also listen to music or take naps to help clear my mind. These activities help me stay calm and focused, especially when I’m working on a project or solving a coding problem.

How did you start coding?

I was first introduced to coding in Primary 3 during CCA, where we used Scratch to make simple games. That was when I got really fascinated by what coding could do—just a few blocks or lines of code could create something interactive and fun. Since then, I’ve been exploring and learning more.

Why did you decide to join the International Coding Showcase 24/25 (ICS)?

I saw ICS as a great way to test my skills by building a program based on a theme. It was also a chance for me to express my creativity through code and gain valuable experience. I thought it would be a fun and meaningful opportunity to challenge myself and learn from others too.

I want to do well in the National Olympiad in Informatics and be able to code functional programs and websites. If I keep improving, I’d definitely consider a future career in tech.

What have you learned from your ICS participation?

ICS helped me become more creative and innovative. It pushed me to think of real-world problems and how to solve them with code. Coming up with ideas and designing solutions gave me a better understanding of how coding can make a difference and really strengthened my problem-solving skills.

Here is Yu Shern’s ICS 2024/25 Entry, Singapore Zoo AI, that won him the Gold and Judge’s Choice (Budding Coder) Award!

What are your future coding aspirations?

I aim to do well in the National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI). I also want to become confident in building real, functional programs and websites. While I’m still thinking about my future career, I know that if I continue learning and improving, I’d be very open to working in coding or tech-related fields.

From Scratch beginnings to a Gold Award at ICS, Yu Shern’s journey is one of growth, creativity, and quiet determination. With his eyes set on NOI and a passion for building functional tech, we’re excited to see where coding takes him next!
