From the colorful world of LEGO to the digital space of Scratch and Python, 11-year-old Joseph from Fairfield Methodist Primary School has been turning imagination into innovation since he was 7.
A seasoned ICS participant, Joseph’s years of effort and growth were recognized at the International Coding Showcase 2024/25, where he earned the coveted Platinum Award.
With a love for structured thinking and a heart set on improving technology for everyone, Joseph proves that small steps—like snapping LEGO bricks or writing lines of code—can lead to big achievements.

Tell us about yourself!
In my free time, I love building LEGO sets, drawing, playing piano, and video games. LEGO helps me understand how small pieces can come together to make something bigger. I find coding very similar—it’s like building with logic, step by step, until something amazing takes shape.
How did you start coding?
My parents signed me up for a robotics holiday camp when they saw how much I loved LEGO. That’s where I was introduced to Scratch Jr, and I realised I actually enjoyed the coding part more than the robot-building.
Not just a coder, Joseph also plays the piano!
I joined Coding Lab soon after, starting with Scratch when I was 7. It was fun to create my own sprites, backgrounds, and music—and make them all work together using code. The instructors made learning fun and clear, and Coding Lab’s programs helped me build up from one level to the next. With each step, I gained the confidence to take on more advanced coding.
Why did you decide to join the International Coding Showcase 24/25 (ICS)?
I’ve joined the ICS every year since 2021, when I was 7. At first, it was just something to do during the school holidays. But it became a way for me to challenge myself, explore creative ideas, and see how my skills compared with others.
Joseph has also participated in ICS 2021 and 2022 and clinched the Accomplishment Award!
What have you learned from your ICS participation?
This year, I learned how quickly I can pick up something new when I have a goal. One of the best things about ICS is that the theme gives me direction - sometimes I want to create something, but I don’t know where to begin. The challenge helps me get started and think more creatively.
What are your future coding aspirations?
Sometimes computers lag or take too long to load. I want to work on improving how computers perform, so they’re more efficient and easier to use. Whether it’s user experience or optimisation, I want to help make tech better for everyone.
Joseph’s journey—from LEGO bricks to coding logic—is a shining example of how structured creativity can lead to powerful outcomes. With a deep curiosity, consistent effort, and a heart set on improvement, Joseph is already showing the qualities of a future tech innovator.
