Read on to find out more about her coding journey and aspirations!

I wanted a challenge and to create something on my own. My Coding Lab teacher encouraged me to believe in myself and my coding skills.

Tell us about yourself!

I enjoy reading and coding! I like exploring new ideas and learning how to make things work through code.

How did you start coding?

I was curious about what white hat hackers do, so I joined a holiday Scratch camp. That was my first step into coding—and I’ve loved it ever since!

Why did you decide to join the International Coding Showcase 24/25 (ICS)?

I wanted to push myself with a new challenge and create something entirely on my own. ICS gave me the chance to do that, and my Coding Lab teacher helped me believe I could.

I want to be able to code an app that can find and eliminate viruses—that’s my dream!

What have you learned from your ICS participation?

I learned that if you persevere and don’t give up, you can reach your goals. It was a fun and meaningful experience where I got to express myself through design and coding.

Here is Wen Yan’s ICS 2024/25 Entry, Taking Care of Animals, that won her the Gold and Judge’s Choice (Best Design) Award! Ever wanted to know what a day in the life of a Zookeeper consists of? Wen Yan’s project, Taking Care of Animals, will show you how important zookeepers are in maintaining the health of all the animals we see at the Singapore Zoo!

What are your future coding aspirations?

I want to create an app that can detect and remove viruses. I think it would be amazing to help people through technology like that!

Siow Wen Yan’s creativity, confidence, and passion for tech shine brightly in everything she does—from her beautifully designed projects to her dream of building tools that protect others. With her fearless curiosity and determination, Wen Yan is certainly one young coder to keep an eye on!
